Branding Yourself to Grow Your Online Business

Branding yourself will result in targeted, quality leads coming in to your business.First, let’s clarify what “branding yourself” means. To begin with, you are a unique individual with talents, gifts, abilities, experiences and a story that no one else has to offer. No matter what you’ve been doing, there are people out there who have been where you were, and they can relate to your story.Your story and all that it entails makes you uniquely YOU.So let’s talk about “branding”…When I say these brands, what do you think of?
Heinz 57Jell-OTropicanaOreoNo matter who you are, you are thinking:
ketchupgelatinorange juice(black and white) cookiesThe top list are the brands… the second list is what the brand provides. You see the logo, the brand name, the product everywhere. When someone hands you a bowl of gelatin, you thank them for the Jell-O, even if it is store brand gelatin. Why?Because the product and the brand are synonymous…there is almost no distinction between them. What does Jell-O have to do with YOU?People know you for something. You have certain characteristics that draw friends to you, that compel people to trust you, like you and have a relationship with you. Your name becomes synonymous with those things that they adore about you (or in some bad cases, what they deplore about you). When someone says “Mary Smith” the people that love Mary automatically feel that love, and it makes them smile. Of course, on the flip side is “Pete Scam” which bring up the emotions of anger and resentment.Your brand is who you ARE. You are unique based on the life you experience and the things you share. So, your brand is YOU. Your name and your experience, as well as what emotions you invoke in others by their personal interaction with you. What are you currently invoking in others right now?Let’s bring this around to business…your business.Let’s just work with your name. For this example, let’s say you are Mary Smith. Of course, it is a very common name, and if that bothers you, you may feel more confident with a nickname. I would recommend not stressing over this too much. You can be “Mary Smith from California.” You are still Mary.Steer away from giving yourself a title that says you are an expert in something you are not, ex: “Mary Smith, Facebook Expert” may get a lot of attention, but at the same time, if you don’t have the experience, results, social proof to back it up, it can turn against you and soon, you may be known as “Mary Smith, Facebook Scam Artist.”Here’s a real life example of how you don’t have to have some “fancy brand”. There is one gentleman who is a rocking gentleman in the online industry. He is a top earner in his primary company, does training for his team and other companies and is highly respected. His brand has become… “Ed from Ohio”. People only know him that way… and they seek him out to work with, based on that brand he’s created. His last name is a bit tricky to say and to spell. But, if you googled “Ed from Ohio” right now…yep, you’d find him on page 1 of Google! And, if you asked people about him, they would have great things to say about him, probably smiling and sharing their gratitude. That is branding. As you gain credibility and respect from the people around you, as Ed from Ohio did, people that you have already provided value to will want to partner with you in business. And, people who “stumble” across you or hear your name from others, will do the same. You will attract people in to your business quite easily at that point.Your Brand is What/How You Serve OthersSo, Mary Smith from Cali… you’ve already got your name…that part is easy. The next part is to get others to know your name; to speak of you fondly and recommend you to others. If you have tried this before and it didn’t go the way you planned, no worries… you can start from here.Let’s begin with a list. You need to take inventory of all of the talents, gifts, abilities you naturally possess. Include all of your real world experiences as well as things that others have told you that you were really good at doing. This is just for brainstorming, so don’t worry over the logistics right now. Write down hobbies that you enjoy, interests you have a great deal of knowledge about and so on.Where most online business owners miss the mark is they “brand” themselves as a representative of XYZ company. You want to be Mary Smith…the lady who gives tons of value……oh and happens to partner with XYZ company. It’s an afterthought. It’s what you only share when people say, “Hey, you’ve taught me so much. I want to partner with you…what company are you with?”You should go out there and start sharing some of what you know. Not everything, or you’ll end up broke. But, instead of trying to push XYZ company, how about look at the people around you and see where they struggle. Then, look at your inventory (brain storming list) and see what YOU can offer to them for free or very inexpensively, that will help them where they struggle.Position yourself as an expert.Create a stir around who YOU ARE.Here’s another real world example:I know a lady named Sandi. She was known for calling thousands of leads and never getting a sale. Once she plugged in to some training and invested in herself, her business started to grow. From there, she went in deep to learn copywriting. She now owns runs an International company with thousands of people on her list (leads), not to mention making a 6-figure income and helping others do the same. She is now highly respected and sought after as a copywriting genius and a creator of 6-figure income earners. Her name and the expertise she provides is synonymous.Where to go from here?I know this is long, so I will wrap it up here with some bullet points:
Stop branding yourself as (just another) XYZ company representative
Figure out in what way you can position yourself as an expert.
Provide value to your existing circle of influence and/or contacts, team members, business partners
Create momentum from a free or low-cost service or product you can give value with (of your own, ideally)
Ask for testimonials from those who you have shared your service/product with
I believe in YOU,Joy MarinoPS: If you are in need of coaching to get this process stream-lined, just click on the Contact Us tab or the Coaching tab at the top of the page, so we can connect and work through the process together.

Aligning Your Company With Your Brand for Profit

Q: What makes branding unique for business-to-business companies and is it as important for them as branding is for consumer product companies? If your business provides products and services to other businesses, you can achieve the benefits of a strong brand identity in customer loyalty, buying preferences, and referrals to other customers. However, the relationship with your customer is far more complex than when compared with consumer product relationships. Business to business service companies must go above and beyond just satisfying the client’s transactional needs to create positive brand loyalty over time. Business to business brand loyalty has less to do with spending money to build awareness than being committed to a complete and systematic and relentless dedication to an idea that is expressed in every way that touches a customer by every employee, consistently across all communication channels, and sustained over a long period of time. Business to business companies often stumble when they fail to align all of their customer facing operational processes and people with the brand promise of the company.Customers of business to business firms believe that every form of communication they receive from your business, and every interaction that they have with your company, of every type, all combine to form the sum of their customer service experience. Moreover, this experience endures over time, such that errors committed in the past will always remain part of the customer’s perception of their experience with the business, regardless of how well the business may be performing at present. Many companies mistakenly assume that as long as they have highly responsive customer service centers responding to customer calls and resolving issues quickly, then customers will be happy with their business overall. Recognizing the importance of delivering an experience that is consistent with your brand promise across every touch point with customers is the first step to truly differentiating your business. When all those communications channels are aligned and delivering a consistent experience and message to your customers, then you will have achieved a high level of brand efficiency. When any of these channels fails to deliver on the brand promise, then your brand efficiency decreases. When efficiency decreases, there are direct consequences in customer satisfaction and retention, willingness to buy, direct costs required to repair or rework, and in overall financial performance as vital energy in the form of human and financial capital are redirected to address the deficiencies. When brand efficiency is high, then all systems and people in the company can focus most of their energy to serving the customer better, innovating new solutions, beating the competition, and moving the bottom line up.Q: How do business-to-business companies go about establishing their brand identity and loyalty?Businesses commonly assume that their marketing department will communicate their brand through advertising, literature, and promotional activities. While these are important, they are just one small dimension of the totality of communication and interaction that defines the overall customer experience. Indeed, if this was the only effort to implement and communicate a brand identity and build brand loyalty, then by definition it will conflict with all the other communications systems that already exist in the company. This will contribute new sources of communication inconsistencies (“noise”), add new costs to overcome them, and reduce the return on the investment in defining and developing the brand identity in the first place. Clearly the brand promise should be defined and measured across all of the communications systems of the company, including internal reward and recognition systems to encourage employee behavior in accordance with the brand values. For example, have you ever heard in your business that the customer was sold something that differs from your ability to deliver? These can be product/service features, business terms, implementation schedules, service levels, all apparently promised by a sales person, and yet not consistent with the current capability of the business to deliver. In business to business customer relationships, the goal is to develop a long term sustained relationship with the customer. The longer the customer is retained, generally the more profitable the relationship, and the greater the ability to continue to produce revenue from that customer. What if, at the start of the relationship, the product or service does not do what the customer expected, or the business terms or billing processes are cumbersome and prove difficult to comply with, or the service levels are not consistent with expectations, or the product was not implemented according to the schedule that was originally promised? Each one of these issues requires energy and investment by the business to overcome in order to get the customer on an acceptable long term path, albeit with slightly reset expectations. The customer has already experienced significant inconsistencies between the brand promise and the experience of that promise, before the relationship really gets under way. The cost of building brand loyalty with that customer is very high and efforts will continue to be expended over a long period of time as the company goes through extraordinary measures to restore its reputation with that customer and attempt to get the customer’s experience closer to the brand promise. Even simple failures can directly impact the reputation of the business, and the cost of overcoming them. There are many other reasons for the brand promise to be broken without any specific system, product or service experiencing any failure. The result is damaging and costly on brand loyalty, brand efficiency, and the long term cost of repairing and rebuilding the relationship, thus draining resources away from productive work and the bottom line.Q: Can the costs of poor brand performance be measured? The cost of poor brand performance is real and it can be measured. The elements of cost are tangible and often already measured by companies, including: rework, error correction, concessions, lost opportunities, and customer attrition. Each one of these elements increases your cost of service, selling, support, and overhead as remedies are implemented to correct them. These costs can have an exponential impact across the transmission systems: that is, each element or system that fails, or any inconsistency between them or against the brand promise tends to compound the noise in the communication and impact the perception of the customer. Why is there such a compounding effect? Remember that for business to business customers, the sum of all of their experiences and all the communications with your entire firm over time serve to create their perception of your brand. When one element disappoints the customer, it is automatically compounded by another element – even though they may seem totally unconnected from inside your company. Left unchecked, the customer’s disappointment will grow and negative perceptions will expand beyond simply the issues at hand to become a general perception of your whole business. While the cost of negative brand efficiency may be difficult to measure precisely, the direct impact of poor performance and quality on each of the communications systems can be measured. Many businesses have sophisticated processes, software and even six sigma quality improvement programs designed to measure and improve that performance and increase profitability. These initiatives do not often measure systems across the enterprise and rarely, if ever, do they measure the effectiveness and consistency of communication and performance of all of these systems with the intended brand strategy of the business. Managing each one of those issues in isolation and not in a holistic manner aligned with the brand strategy will result in an exponential drain on energy and resources required to deliver sustained profitable growth.Q: In addition to understanding the cost of poor execution, how can companies assess the value of their brand? The Service-Profit Chain developed by Heskett, Sasser and Schlesinger (1997) from Harvard Business School establishes relationships between profitability, customer loyalty, and employee satisfaction, loyalty, and productivity. The Service-Profit Chain is made up several key linkages: profit and growth are stimulated primarily by customer loyalty. Customer loyalty is a direct result of customer satisfaction. Satisfaction is greatly influenced by the value of service provided to customers. Satisfied, loyal, and productive employees create value. Employee satisfaction, in turn, results primarily from high quality support services and policies that enable employees to deliver results to customers. Let’s say that you have high quality support services and polices, and your employee satisfaction surveys suggest your employees are happy. Does that mean your customers are in fact experiencing results that match or exceed you brand promise? Do satisfactory results really help you accomplish your goals of being the leader in your industry? What if the predominant culture of your employee base demonstrates a set of values that are not consistent with the values of your brand promise? What if different parts of your employee population that come into contact with customers have quite different cultures and values? Does your sales force demonstrate the same behaviors and in the same manner and style as your customer service organization?Such inconsistent behaviors between employee groups, and between employees and the brand promise, create disjointed experiences for customers who will find that they are constantly adjusting to your company’s different styles, behaviors, standards of performance, and promises. The customer will quickly conclude they don’t know what you stand for, and they won’t know how to describe their experience with you – perhaps other than “clumsy”. This makes it very difficult to develop a sense of affinity and loyalty with your company. While the Service-Profit Chain model provides an essential foundation to assure that your employees are delivering results to customers, a focus simply on employee support services and policies will not result in employees delighting the customer and delivering on your brand promise. You need a defined employee culture, measurements, and reward and recognition system that aligns behaviors consistent with the brand promise of your business. This strong link and consistent behaviors will strengthen the bond of loyalty with your customers, lower the cost of support service, and accelerate brand efficiency and sustained profitability. In financial terms, the value of a brand can be a significant component of the value of the company. The price paid for acquired businesses is frequently substantially higher than the appraised value determined from the tangible assets of the company. According to a study in 1995: “the average market value of all American-based publicly traded companies was 70% greater than their replacement cost (e.g., their tangible net asset value.)” 1Assessments of the actual brand value of a business to business services company should include the internal business processes and communications systems to determine how effectively the various functions and people are aligned to deliver performance consistent with the brand promise of the company. Unrealistic prices can be paid for brand value that may be more tied to market awareness and market share, than any real capability of the company to underpin its brand equity with real sustained performance. Brand value should be discounted by elements that fail to deliver effectively, or where significant inconsistencies exist between the company and its customers’ expectations for the future.Consider the case of Philip Morris: “In 1989, Philip Morris paid $12.9 billion for Kraft, six times its net asset value. According to Philip Morris CEO Hamish Maxwell, his company needed a portfolio of brands that had strong brand loyalty [i.e., customer relationships] that could be leveraged to enable the tobacco company to diversify [i.e., financial relationships], especially in the retail food industry [i.e., trade relationships].”2 Philip Morris paid billions for a set of relationships and the expectations that those relationships would enable Philip Morris to conduct business in entirely new ways in the future. In addition to significantly affecting the purchase price of a company, the value of the brand and brand equity directly affects stock price of the company. A Cap Gemini Ernst & Young report issued in 2000 concluded “brand power can account for 5 to 7 percent of the change in a company’s stock price.” 3 A study of 220 companies identified that corporate brand image could be quantified with the following components:Advertising spending 30%
Size of company 23%
Low dividend 10%
Earnings volatility 7%
Stock price growth 8%
Other factors* 22%*(including [other marketing components such as] events and publicity, industry affiliation, product categories, message quality, etc.)4 Thus 52% of the factors influencing the brand image are those associated with ensuring that your brand message and promise are effectively defined and articulated through all the transmission systems in your company.Through this brief analysis we can easily conclude that effectively developing and executing a comprehensive company-wide brand strategy will contribute directly to the value of the company. The steps that can be taken to accomplish this are defined and uniquely adaptable to any business. The results will be measured in the improved performance and innovation of every function of the company, leading to improved sustained profitable growth and continuing growth in stock equity.1,2 Tom Duncan, Driving Brand Value, pg. 4.3 “Name Brand Calculus or Imaginary Numbers?” US Banker, Volume 113, Number 6, Page 26, June 2003.4 Ad Value, Leslie Butterfield, ed., Butterworth Heinemann, Oxford, 2003, “How advertising impacts on share price,” James Gregory, pgs. 17-25.

But, there are creative ways of building a powerful brand without spending a lot of money. Before you start developing your brand marketing strategy, you must understand what a “brand” is and how it can affect the profitability and success of your business. What Is a Brand?A brand can be a name, a phrase, an image, a symbol or a combination of things that tend to identify the products or services of one company as unique or different from its competitors. A brand can represent something intangible about your company, your product or service. It can be a combination of feelings and perceptions about your name, image, quality, reputation and personality. At its most powerful level, branding creates in the mind of your customers the perception that there is no other company, product or service like yours!A powerful brand can influence your customers to buy your product or service over your competitors — even if they have to pay more for it! A powerful brand can influence your customers to think that no one else, but you or your company, can deliver the quality or the benefits that they want. Why Is Branding Important?* Your personal reputation or branding can attract and repel opportunities. It has a powerful effect on people’s opinions and actions.* The most powerful marketing you can have is a positive reputation or branding. It can influence people to buy. It can influence people to choose you over your competitors.* When opportunities are attracted to you and you don’t know why, it’s often your personal reputation or branding at work.* A good reputation or brand builds a customer’s confidence and trust BEFORE a sale is made.* Do your very best to protect your reputation and your brand. Even if it took you many years to build it, it will take just a few seconds to destroy it.* The most successful businesses are not necessarily those with the best employees, products or services. They are the ones with the best brand due to consistent application of the best marketing strategies and the best brand management. How Do You Develop Your Own Brand Identity?Make a decision about your brand building goals before you start developing your brand identity. You want to be clear as to what it is that you want to accomplish with your brand… what “image” you want for your brand. Once you have a unique brand identity, you will have to communicate your brand in all your marketing strategies consistently and repeatedly.”To establish a favorable and well-defined brand personality with the consumer, the advertiser must be consistent. You can’t use a comic approach today and a scientist in a white jacket tomorrow without diffusing and damaging your brand personality.” — Morris Hite* Make a list of things that are unique about you, your company and your products or services. Based on the information on your list, create your unique brand identity. Your brand identity should help you come up with good answers to the following questions:1. Why would anyone use your web site instead of your competitor’s site?2. Why would anyone buy from you instead of your competitors?* Select the best marketing strategies that can create increased awareness of your unique brand identity in your target customers. Communicate your brand in all your daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly marketing strategies… consistently and repeatedly.* Communicate what is unique about your brand as often as you can. It is not only the best competitive advantage that you can have… it is the most powerful business edge that your competitors can NEVER take away from you!

How Personal and Business Branding Begins With a Professional Headshot

Why it’s Time to Ditch Your Selfie Profile Photo for a More Favourable First Impression

Does your social media profile photo reflect the professional business brand image you want to be perceived as by prospects?

What about your website or other touchpoints a prospective client might encounter to help them determine if you are the best person to work with?

I find many solopreneurs and business owners are not as keenly aware as they should be about how acutely important professional headshots are to their personal and business brand.

I know I didn’t for many years until I finally broke down and had my first photoshoot done a few years back.

Wow, what a difference it made to my overall brand positioning and the perception others had of me as a business professional! Suddenly the first impression I was making on prospective clients and business-related connections was far more favourable.

All thanks to Taneane Twele of TT Photography in Mission and Judy Doduk of Judy D Beauty in Abbotsford who have teamed up to provide photography, make-up and even hair services in their Shine Portraits package.

Since it’s been 3 years since those initial photos were taken, I recently headed back to Taneane’s studio to better reflect how I look today.

I know how many business owners strongly resist having professional photos done. Me too. I was overweight and avoided the camera lens at all costs. But somehow, miraculously as far as I was concerned, Taneane was able to position me in various poses that showcased me instead of the excess weight I was carrying.

Whatever your reasons for avoiding the camera, trust me when I tell you a professional photographer, combined with professional make-up application, will make a world of difference and enable you to be showcased professionally in front of your prospects and clients.

At the end of the day, professional photos give the impression you care about your personal and professional image. It’s that favourable perception others have of you that will greatly enhance the success of your business.

If your profile photo was taken years ago or not done by a professional photographer, it’s time to step up and create a better lasting impression by booking a professional photoshoot. And once you have your new photos in hand, ensure you use them!

Here’s several places to incorporate your professional headshot:

- All Social Media Profiles. Whether you are active on them or not, people are accessing any and all of your social media profiles at any given moment.

Try to vary your photos if possible. For instance, I use a more personable, friendly photo on my personal Facebook page where a more professional photo is used on the Business page, LinkedIn and other professional networks.

They are each professional photos but what I’m wearing and my pose makes the difference between the friendly and casual look compared to a more polished and professional one.

- Online Profiles. If you do any form of content marketing, the odds are good you have bio profiles scattered in several places that showcase you being the author of your piece. Take a look at places like Storify, Business 2 Community, or YouInc and ensure your professional headshot is in place.

Don’t forget about other websites and platforms you might not visit often like Skype, Medium, Alignable, WordPress, DISQUS, Gravatar, and other places that require an avatar to go with your name and bio.

- Social Media Banners. If you are the face of your business, then you need to get comfortable with seeing yourself in the spotlight. For instance, if you are a speaker, author or industry leader, then your social media banners should also include your photo.

Have your photographer take shots of you “in action” either posed or live when on stage. This welcomes followers and prospects into your world and gives them a feel for what their experience would be like if they went to see your presentation.

- Your Website. Most entrepreneurs are the face of their business regardless of the industry they are in. Placing a professional image of you throughout your website is imperative for prospects to get a favourable impression of you and your business.

Use your About page wisely and ensure your photo evokes trust with your website visitors. You want your photo to give the impression you are friendly, approachable and honest.

- Email Signature. How many emails do you send out in a day or week? More than likely that’s a lot of eyeballs you have an opportunity to gain better brand visibility with through an email signature.

Get a professional eSignature designed that includes your photo so when people meet you in person, they feel they already know you and are a familiar face.

- Marketing Collateral. Whatever you do when it comes to your print and digital marketing pieces, you are definitely leaving a lasting impression on whoever it comes in contact.

Whether it’s your business card, promotional materials or advertisements, take advantage of the opportunity to have your personal and brand be showcased by using your professional head shot.

This will help build upon the valuable “Know, Like and Trust” factor you want to achieve with your target market.

Sadly, the truth of being a business person is prospects are going to judge you based on your appearance. That first impression could literally make them decide whether or not they can trust you to do business with or move on to your competitor.

Worker Shortage Might Be Excellent News For The Economy

A worker shortage might be excellent news for the economy! Maybe, just maybe, firms will awake and see workers’ substantial contribution to their success. Some CEOs take unconscionable sums and destroy their firm’s value, unlike many frontline workers who create value. During the pandemic, CEOs took vast sums as they laid-off workers. Some firms sought bankruptcy protection, but hat didn’t stop their greedy CEOs from snatching hefty bonuses.

We have a worker shortage and firms are scrambling to hire whomever is willing. Some firms, like McDonalds have paid signing bonuses. Canada’s Loblaw and its competitors paid a bonus to frontline workers when the pandemic began. They stopped it after three months in unison with their competitors. When government confronted them about this collusion, they claimed it happened independently. Go figure! It’s like you caught your three-year-old with her hand in the cookie jar and she said, Mom, “Cookie Monster did it!”

Worker Shortage Inevitable With Shoddy Treatment

Loblaw’s behavior disturbs me. During the bonus period, profits soared. Per se, that’s no problem. I favor firms making profits. To be sure, I am against government taxing profits. But paying workers the bonus during the pandemic shouldn’t hinge on profits. It was just right. Meanwhile, my wife and I shopped at a Loblaw store and workers continued their excellent service despite Loblaw’s slight.

Leaders must realize frontline workers are the firm’s foundation and treat them well, not as cogs turning out CEOs bonuses! When employers treat workers like machines, they disengage. Gallup said, over several decades, they and other researchers found a strong link between employees’ workplace engagement and the company’s overall performance. Yet employers refuse to accept this. But there is good news: surveys show some firms break the mold and treat workers with respect: Cisco, Apple, Accenture, IBM, FedEx are a few.

Next Quarter’s Earnings Drives Businesses

Companies see next quarter as the prize, so they exploit workers and fudge next quarter’s numbers. I repeat: I am against government taxing business. However, I favor the Biden Build Back Better provision to tax share buybacks that the House passed, and it is before the Senate, even if it might have only a modest effect on share buybacks. Companies shouldn’t be spending billions buying back shares while exploiting workers.

Firms should present to shareholder meetings options to use buyback funds. Choices might include effects of paying bonuses to frontline workers with buyback funds. Shareholders should hear about potential strategic investments, too. Another option is stopping buy-backs for five years after layoffs. Executives, too, shouldn’t get bonuses within five years of layoffs. We must get rid of worker exploitation that enhances CEO bonuses.

Importance of Restaurant Marketing Agency

Restaurants need to encompass considerable marketing avenues for the sake of success. Without publicity and marketing, there are chances that the restaurant may not survive in the market. But with thorough planning and enactment, the restaurant’s promotion can grab the customer’s attention just like that.

The restaurant business is quite tough. It is difficult for the owners to flourish in this thrift and with very low profits. Restaurant owners are enthusiastic about food because not much profit is left after paying all the mandatory expenses like produce, wages, upkeep, and maintenance. Better so than eternally, restaurants publicity and marketing are necessary.

Some restaurant owners thoroughly expand their profit margin by contracting their business prototype and resemblance to others, assembling a franchise, spreading their reputation, and cultivating a future passive income.
